Kanjifind Online offers all the Japanese characters of the Joyo Kanji list, which is a selection of kanji recommended by the Japanese government for common use. There are currently 1945 kanji in this list, but the list will change slightly in 2010, due to additions the government is considering. Kanjifind Online will be adjusted after the additions are finalized.
There are many other kanji besides those in the Joyo Kanji list, and users who need to find those characters should consider purchasing KanjiFind Advanced.
Only on and kun readings are included in Kanjifind Online. (An on reading is a pronunciation of the character that was originally based on a Chinese pronunciation; a kun reading is a pronunciation of the character originally based on a native Japanese pronunciation.) In addition to on and kun readings, KanjiFind Advanced presents name readings and special readings.
Your computer must have Japanese capabilities activated to display the kanji characters of Kanjifind Online. Some Windows systems: Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Check the box for "Install files for East Asian languages." See system Help for additional support. Macintosh: Display is automatic.
Search by any field or combination of fields. Paste a character to the Kanji field or enter search information such as a suspected reading. See Search Tips for more information.
KanjiFind character dictionaries include the System of Kanji Indexing by Patterns (SKIP), which is copyright 1990 by Jack Halpern and used by agreement.
A person seeking a kanji character for ornamental use (a tattoo, artwork, etc.) should understand that, if a single character is selected, it would be bettor to note and refer to the kun reading and its related meaning, since this will more accurately apply to single character use. (An on reading is used almost exclusively for instances in which the character is combined with a second character to form a two-character word. See on and kun description above.)
While Kanjifind Online is useful for many purposes, some features are not available and it offers many fewer kanji than KanjiFind Advanced, which provides full functionality and complete data.
See KanjiFind Advanced for additional information.
